El Salvador's citizens have been hit by the global slump in the main part because their currency is also the US dollar and the economy relies heavily on remmitances from overseas workers.
Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo travelled from San Salvador to the town of Intipuca, to find out what effect this is having on El Salvador's population.

I'm Salvadoran- American and I have been to El Salvador, Italy, Spain, and Mexico. I think most latin american countries need to stop blaming the U.S. for all their misfortunes. With all the money that Salvadorians send to El Salvador, where does it go, yet all I hear is that there is a dependency from Salvadorians here. Good point, but that is not the issue though, as lots of Salvadorians, whether legally or illegaly in the US are sending money back home. The problem underlies on how this money is being channeled back home, lets face it we've created a dependency. My advise to them is to stop spending your money on that bag of chips and save it or go to school. Do you think the rich get richer by spending more money, no. The rich are richer because they are cheap and stingy and know how to save a penny.
