These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now!
We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter "TDI" diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

The Prius has made a lot of enemies, nor least amongst the same forces that successfully killed off the EV1 electric car, alas this means a constant spew of the Prius does more damage then a Hummer' propaganda, fortunately, most people don't get taken in - but alas some do.
Sulfur gets chucked out of volcanoes.
The Prius battery is actually quite small, and uses nickel metal hydride technology that was developed as an environmentally better alternative to the NICAD cell.

The EV1 was a brillient idea, and should'nt have been shelved, combined with solar technology, as thing's move forward would have had a long term future, The prius is a total different fish, not economical, or Green, a great marketing ploy only, it DOES cause more long term damage than modern Petrol cars, and way more than small engine european cars.
Bio Diesel from waste cooking oil is a practicle short term option, as are fully electric cars, and Hydrogen has to be the future.

Those mines have been at it long before environmental concerns became an issue, you'd think the way people carry on that the Prius was responsible for all of it. Prius as given those dictators at GM a hiding, and that makes it the greenest thing ever. Yes the EV1 is a good idea, despite it using the same battery technology as the Prius - just much bigger.

The Focus wasn't bad! A normal Civic or Corolla would have been about the same. The Honda Fit might not have done much better. The Smart is the loser here to me. Only holds two people and harly any luggage and only a little better mpg than Focus.

Hmm. The Prius is the best at the overall cost and also the greenest. Why isn't it the overall best ? As i see it : VW for long trips and Prius for mixed city driving and average range trips.
